We are all about French markets, or "marchés" around here! While the market season is generally over here in the states, you can still find the occasional Christmas market in larger towns. However, the Christmas market in Europe is a long-standing tradition worth experiencing!
Whether you're in Strasbourg or Nice, Paris or Lyon during the month of December, the fanciful and festive Christmas markets in France are sure to please. Usually outdoors, these markets typically include wooden stalls that house different local artisans selling traditional decorations, food, and gift ideas for everyone on your list. You'll find people strolling the aisles with a steamy cup of "vin chaud" (see our last post for our favorite recipe) while oohing and aahing over the beautiful selection of delectable and delightful goodies available.
One of the oldest Christmas markets in France can be found in Strasbourg; it dates back to 1570 while the oldest European market was established in Dresden, Germany in 1434. Every year a market is chosen as the best market in the country. Year after year, the Montbéliard market in La Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, a department in eastern France takes high honors.
